Do you believe in Easter? (and Human Evolution)

Do you believe in Easter?

The question in the post title came across my desk today from someone’s email.

As a matter of fact, with an unsuppressed scientific base, one would find it hard not to believe in the teachings of a master and the stages of human development demonstrated by His miracles.

Which begs the question Where is human evolution University studies beyond Maslov’s elementary concept? As Stagnant as our energy base?

Barbara Marx Hubbard writes "As systems breakdown and old thought forms reveal their inadequacy to heal or solve the massive and mounting problems we are facing, the evolutionary perspective, and most particularly "evolutionary spirituality," is breaking through. I believe that we are now collectively launching the Evolutionary Human Potential Movement. We are not aiming at fixing the old system or improving ourselves in the old model. We are literally being pressed from within by the impulse of evolution to give birth to a new, more universal human, and a culture that can sustain and draw forth the potential of humanity in alignment with nature and spirit".

"All of the things which I do shall ye do also, and greater things than these shall ye do. Is it not written in your law, I said, ye are Gods?"

With Light defined by the quantity C as the kinetic energy equivalent of the mass energy of matter, “Let there be Light” begins to take on new meaning

As language “Norms” of 2000 years ago are clarified and upgraded with 21st Century language norms (and science terms), we begin to find numerous points of commonality. The “Possible Human” written in November 2000, provokes some interesting observations and fuel for thought.

The Possible Human

Evolutionary
or Stagnant Article
(2000)

THE POSSIBLE HUMAN:

Wow! Man! What a question. Too deep. Don’t ask. Irrelevant.

We are not even certain whether the human species evolved or was created. Ask the opinion polls. Aside from region variability, the average answer would probably lie at 50% for, and 50% against, either position. So how can we begin to question whether humanity has "arrived" at the epitome of all there is, or are we still evolving? Besides, its "Partyeeeeeee" time, or so the commercials and the college dormitories scream.

Well, we will bypass the role statistics, majority, and opinion polls play on today’s mainstream lifestyle, as they shape and constrict its future.

However, this newsmagazine cannot and will not evade this imposing question. Specifically because, ultimately the answer will become the crux to our understanding, multidimensionally, of the space/time equivalency of mass energy of matter and the interacting part consciousness performs in our perception of reality.

Created or evolved aside, common sense and science both dictate that the human species is considerably remote from being all that it can be. So where and what, pray tell, are we evolving to? Does no one dare question this reality? Are there no answers because the reports and evidence are too conflicting and confusing? Is the question irrelevant to bringing about a sustainable and abundant future for humanity?

Does no one dare question this reality?

From a religious consideration, a desacralized society may be one in which religion is unacceptable or has become a rote ritual. Eliade (1957) in The Sacred and Profane refers to a desacralized society as devoid of meaning, purpose, possessing nothing to guide humanities attitudes and actions. Where events, work, economics are justified only by pleasure and profit, where cyclic time becomes terrifying and the view of existence a pessimistic struggle and a desperate clinging, grasping, searching for the ultimate trivia in the search for identity.

Out of this fog of darkness devoid of meaning, both religious and psychological views assert that human suffering arises. Poverty, lack, destruction, misery worldwide, past and present stem from the minds of human beings, the unhealthy emotions and low self-esteem of individuals, the fear, the hate, the jealousy, and the greed of individuals that fail to see a worthwhile aim. Yet, how do you relate the multitude of religious views and dogmas to modern day science and technology, to economics, to power and politics, and to what we teach our children?

search for identity.

A painfully oversimplified spectacle of human evolution results in the conclusion that once we discipline and control our base and beastly nature, we receive our wings and live happily ever after and forever, in some sort of utopia, playing the harp, bored stiff. No wonder we are scrambling with frenzy to reach this fabulous goal. A more in-depth study would reveal that both science and religion lie on the same continuum of reality, with religion in general, presenting a much wider viewing point of reality, than the sciences, each with their isolated point of view. So why the lack of connection? Did someone throw the baby out with the bathwater? Or has religious dogma and rote ritual, in attempting to preserve the past, become petrified, preserved as in preserves, relevant in language symbolism solely to the time and culture of its origin? If not so, why the continued separation of science and religion?

What is the nature of the human species, its purpose, and where is it going? What have we done with the vast storehouse of knowledge, wisdom and understanding about human nature residing in religious disciplines worldwide?

Is there a developmental spectrum to human nature and consciousness? Are there stages to the development of the "self", "spirit", or "soul"? Much of Western psychology’s definition of maturity and health reach no further than psychosocial identity, object constancy, mutuality in object relations, and more adaptive, less conflicted rearrangements of impulse and defense as Dr. Jack Engler (1984) points out. In contrast, Buddhist psychology shows there is nothing enduring and abiding, nothing we can call "real" self or soul or spirit or any fixed entity. You are catapulted into a world of constant and total change, moment by moment, with nothing enduring in either the inner or outer universe for more than a few milliseconds, as the physicists and psychophysicists have confirmed (Engler 1984).

Now where does that leave the "self" or "no-self"? If a developmental spectrum of human nature exists, then the long term benefits and end goals of the Possible Human either lack clarity, or are inconspicuous by their absence in our educational institutions. The metaphysical supposition of a metamorphosis of human nature, where the individual begins to sense his early state of existence as comparable to a frog floating in a barrel, unaware of the beautiful lake and world of senses (beyond our five senses) on the outside of his barrel, remains a fantasy. The common retort supporting this pretension concludes that such personality growth and awareness must be individually experienced to be realized as part of the continuum of reality, otherwise it is inaccessible. And the access gates are solely through the innumerable systems passed down through the centuries, of years of stupendous study, discipline, meditation, physical deprivation, sense deprivation, pain, or the vague love and good works series.

If a developmental spectrum of human nature exists, then the long term benefits and end goals of the Possible Human either lack clarity, or are inconspicuous by their absence in our educational
institutions.

However obscure and incompatible these explanations may be to our western lifestyle, they become even more unpalatable through the ill-defined and prehistoric descriptions of the paths to attainment or salvation. Without contemporary definitions in modern day scientific language, a possible developmental spectrum of human nature remains in the realm of philosophical wonder, religious contemplation and the varieties of personal, opinionated beliefs. Quite meaningless to the causal forces that shape our future, a social structure of extreme physical sense gratification, a society that promotes an enduring struggle for survival, for pleasure and sustenance needs, as an end in itself. This latter state of survival needs and hygiene factors is commendably defined and outlined by psychologists Maslow and Hertzberg (1981). Though both theories attempt to lead to higher levels of personality development, of meta-needs, peak experiences, self –actualization, intrinsic motivational factors, the benefits still are vague, and subject to criticism.

Are there any other integrating factors that may possibly lead to a self-motivating, rewarding potential of human evolutionary growth, or even assure us with a certain amount of certainty, that such developmental capability even exists. The bridge, the tie that binds, again seems to lead to space, time, energy, gravitational mass relationships to consciousness (or spirit, if you will). Some sources (1965) point to a mutual reference point of similarity approximately 2000 years apart. In 1901, Max Planck’s Law of Radiation states that the level of energy upon which an nuclear particle or atom exists at any given moment is directly proportionate to its frequency of oscillation, and that the energy level of any body of matter is, therefore proportionate to the mean frequency of its particles. For at least two thousand years the metaphysician has stated that the level of energy, spirit, or potential upon which any particle, any body of matter, or any "Being" exists at any given moment, is directly proportionate to its rate of vibration.

The obvious begins to glare out at you – as the electron can change energy levels and states, the possibility exists that large bodies of matter or "beings" can be induced to raise their energy levels and states. Though acting as observers of nuclear phenomena, human beings can not be excluded from the "real" world of physics and still be considered real. Where might this line of thought lead us?

Let us bring forth just a few of the vast array of uncomfortable taboos. Business executives taking seminars on "firewalking", walking barefoot over coals; scientific studies and observations in altered states, alpha states, psi abilities, paranormal abilities, meditative states and their claims; superhuman feats in moments of extreme emergency; the mind-body affinity of the placebo effect, instant health variations of multiple personalities, spontaneous remission, psychoneuroimmunology, and spiritual healing; a nuclear particle’s sensitivity to its polar charge altered, simultaneously, at a distance; finally the "miracles" of Jesus of Nazareth.

Denial and repression are Freudian defense mechanisms related to fear. Today we can
no longer deny the enormous data of evidence we have developed and discovered

Denial and repression are Freudian defense mechanisms related to fear. Today we can no longer deny the enormous data of evidence we have developed and discovered. We just have to expand our "real" and merge it with common sense and reason to our scientific disciplines. We simply must ask what do higher energy levels, frequencies, and gravitational mass have to do with levels of consciousness, feeling, matter and space/time? The answers, fortunately or unfortunately, depending upon your point of view, have stared us in the face for several thousands of years at the minimum – in the repository of our religious and metaphysical disciplines, in language appropriate interpretation. To be continued…

Evolutionary or Stagnant - .........part 2
A fast trip down fantasy lane

(continued from vol 1 #1 - see reprint in "Evolutionary or Stagnant" section)

".........extraordinary experiences - intense, overwhelming, indescribable - are recorded at every time in history, and in every place on the globe and are widespread in American society today. No one with any familiarity with history or anthropology or psychology can deny they occur. They are a form of "altered states of consciousness" - to use the current approved phrase - something like intoxication or delirium or a hypnotic trance but different in their intensity, their joyfulness and their 'lifting out' dimension. In some cases, such experiences were triggered by drugs, in others by ritiual dances, in others by disciplined meditation; but most such 'ecstatic interludes' about which we have accounts seem to be purely spontaneous - a man casually walking by a tennis court is suddenly caught up in a wave of peace and joy 'as time stands still'. Andrew Greeley, New York Times

In the previous issue we reviewed an elementary, yet broad spectrum of confusion circumscribing the question of the possible human - evolutionary or stagnant. We looked at some religious and psychological issues, at a possible scientific connection, and some uncomfortable taboos. We argued that a conceivable developmental spectrum of human nature would remain in the realm of philosophical wonder, religious contemplation, and the varieties of personal, opinionated beliefs without the support and authority of contemporary scientific views. We suggested this support would require currently isolated, scientific courses of study (points of view), to re-evaluate existing evidence across disciplines and time, and form congruent macro theories.

We also suggested that our centuries old, religious and metaphysical disciplines (appropriately interpreted), may provide us with a larger viewing point to further investigate our true nature and expanding relationship to Reality, without trying to "re-invent the wheel". A quick review will readily disclose a profuse number of highly acclaimed discoveries from our modern era, in many an old metaphysical textbook - with a different label on it, or called by a different name.

With the multidimensions of 'scale' described by fractals - chaos to order, point of view to viewing point, comes the capacity to confirm that faith and reason are not opposed, that science or knowledge is not disembodied from will and emotion, from values and life; that knowledge does not disengage from wisdom and understanding as it proceeds from our own nature to universal nature.

the imposed limits are painting a fanatically bland, stale, and shallow spectrum of human potential and human evolution

So too, the New Physics imparts elementary clues to the "statistical" nature of consciousness and reality very akin to 'general' metaphysical doctrine (underscore general, as opposed to specific, while Western psychological traditions (particularly Humanistic and Transpersonal Psychology) and Buddhist Inner Science, taken together, key in on a developmental perspective of human nature - from early stages in the development of the Self, to later, more advanced stages, respectively.

In addition, this newsmagazine is proposing that the limits imposed by the isolated and incompatible theories of relativity and quantum mechanics is painting a fanatically bland, stale, and shallow spectrum of human potential and human evolution, which extends to and constricts recognition of our relationship to the Universal - the Spiritual Dimension.

Deekak Chopra, M.D. (1989), writes in Quantum Healing, "There is no more beautiful experience than when the world expands beyond its accustomed limits. These are moments when reality takes on splendor."

Before we delve deeper into the mathematical incompatibility of the statistical nature of Quantum Mechanics verses the Theory of Relativity with their respective, isolated limits blockading an awe-inspiring vision of the possible human, let us examine a simplified, yet broad revision of a metaphysical and religious doctrine.

Other articles and future issues will then begin in earnest to scrutinize and question the limits set by the uncertainty principle in quantum theory which inadvertently generalizes both the statistical and individual nature of consciousness and reality into one and the same act; we will examine the limits set by the theory of relativity, why it breaks down at a theorized Big Bang or singularity, why we assume as fact that gravity is always attractive, and why we assume that the velocity of light limit is transferable to the velocity of a specified type of mass. These confusing limits, or misinterpretation of evidence, are creating immeasurable restraints upon the nature and causality of thought and the reality we experience. We will touch upon the Bose-Einstein condensation, Frohlich systems, Subquantum Kinetics, Fractals, and the radius of curvature of natural law. The outcome, we expect, will be a far simpler, more common sense view of human nature, reality, as well as a far greater degree of freedom toward a sustainable and bountiful future.

Let's call this journey a fast trip down fantasy lane, prior to the possibility (statistically speaking) that the fantasy may in the future do a quantum collapse into reality. The journey is a slightly summarized version of a forthcoming reprint.

It includes and coordinates many bits of knowledge and philosophy, which are known to almost every student of life, but seldom put together. We will throw into the mixing pot the philosophy of Aristotle of Thrace, the teachings and the demonstrations of Jesus of Nazareth, and the mathematical concepts of Dr. Albert Einstein.

Hopefully, we will come up with, in its essence, a road map of the development of the human soul, showing the point at which that development begins, the direction and nature of its journey, its final goal, and a description of a number of way points which will be encountered.

We will define science as the orderly and intelligently directed search for truth that may be divided into three general groupings, the physical, mental/social, and spiritual sciences for simplicity sake. We will note that a sharp line cannot be drawn between them, because the divisions overlap, and because the fundamental laws that govern all three divisions are the same laws.

To clarify this preposterous assumption, let us begin with Dr. Albert Einstein.

One of the best known but least understood concepts of Einstein is that which results in the formula E=MC2. It points out that there is a simple relationship between pure matter and pure energy, that a given quantity of one may be converted into a precise quantity of the other, following a precisely defined curve of conversion. We could illustrate the mass-energy concept by drawing a horizontal line across the bottom of our chart, calling this line "matter". Near the top of our chart we could draw another horizontal line which we could call "energy". Between these two parallel lines we would draw a curved line starting near the left hand end of the line designated matter, and curving upward and to the right until it meets the energy line at the right hand edge. This graphic relationship between matter and energy was by no means new or original when presented in 1905.

Aristotle's first great work titled The Physics containing the four principals of alchemy i.e., earth-solid state, water-liquid state, air-gaseous state, fire-complete conversion of matter to energy, was conceived at least 400years B.C.E. and is virtually identical to Einstein's graphic relationship previously discussed. The text goes on to relate the effects upon matter, which are created by the application of energy, cause, potential of whatever form.

As Aristotle grew a little older and a little bit wiser, it occurred to him that a few things were left out and perhaps he had started from the wrong end of the curve. That instead of the having the basic principles starting with matter or material essence, they should rather be considered as the final manifestation of something that began at a much higher point. So he began his second discourse, The Metaphysics which began with energy, cause, spirit and God, as the cause of all changes which occur in the universe. That the words energy, cause, spirit are synonymous, that spirit is the active principle of change, and that without these principles, the universe could have no demonstrable existence or significance whatever, and are, therefore, obvious attributes of God.

The soul within the body, represents the application of spirit, the active principle of change or as the motivating force. It is the spirit which impels the material essence up the curve of development through stages of constantly increasing significance and manifestation.

Thus was born the two extreme views and separation of the same continuum, physics and metaphysics. To demonstrate that the path is the same regardless of the direction traveled, one of the many mutual reference points is quoted. In 1901, Max Planck's Law of radiation states that the level of energy upon which any nuclear particle or atom exists at any given moment is directly proportionate to its frequency of oscillation, and that the energy level of any body of matter is, therefore, proportionate to the mean frequency of its particles. For at least two thousand years the metaphysician has stated that the level of energy, spirit, or potential upon which any particle, any body of matter, or any being exists, at any given moment, is directly proportionate to its rate of vibration.

Let's throw in another curve. Having considered the significance of our basic chart from the standpoint of physics and metaphysics, how may this same matter, energy, spirit, curve, be used to illustrate the route followed in the development of the human soul?

We will postulate that the body is pure matter without significance and without ability to manifest itself. The soul within the body, represents the application of spirit, the active principle of change or as the motivating force. It is the spirit which impels the material essence up the curve of development through stages of constantly increasing significance and manifestation.

The common psychological entrapments of individuals stuck at this level, even though the needs and desires of the body have long since been met.

We will define the starting point of the curve of development as the "I AM" point, or the point at which the material essence becomes conscious of its own existence. "I Am that I Am". Its first stage, the first goal of developing consciousness is the awareness and attainment of a multitude of physical needs and desires. We could call it the Gold level, the best recognized symbol of the needs and desires of the body and the only one visible during the first stage of  development. We need not discuss the common psychological entrapments of individuals stuck at this level, even though the needs and desires of the body have long since been met.

The second level up the curve of development we will call the knowledge level. Easily identifiable as an accumulation of facts and information, each a potential tool, but unfortunately the mere possession of a large box of tools does not, of itself guarantee that the owner will be able to use those tools successfully in any worthwhile project.

Above the level of knowledge, there is a level we could call Wisdom and above that there is another we will call Understanding which is near the middle of our curve of development, the dividing line between physics and metaphysics.

The dividing line is arbitrary, and has little significance except that below this level, matter or material essence is dominant, and all changes are relatively minor ones produced in matter by the application of varying degrees of energy and spirit. Above the level of understanding, it is energy and spirit that are dominant and matter becomes of relatively little significance. In fact, the nature and characteristics of matter may readily be altered above this level, by the simple application of the energy-spirit combination which was described by Aristotle as the principle of "Cause".

In fact, the nature and characteristics of matter may readily be altered above this level

We will, therefore, place another point upon the curve which we will call "control over matter". When this stage is fully reached, an individual would be able to bring about any desired change in the nature of matter. For example, he can, if he wishes, convert water into wine, or cause five thousand people to be fed with repletion from an original food supply of five loaves and two small fishes, and gather up twelve basket loads of residual food from the meal.

These examples are used only because they were two of the practical demonstrations used by Jesus of Nazareth to illustrate the power and ability which is inherent in this level of development. In his discussion of this level, Jesus spoke of the power of "Faith".

..."Faith" not the sort of wistful hope or even hopeful confidence. The term actually referred to a state of complete and certain knowledge of the ultimate laws of cause and effect

The faith referred to by Jesus of Nazareth was not, however, the sort of wistful hope or even hopeful confidence that we usually think of. The term actually referred to a state of complete and certain knowledge of the ultimate laws of cause and effect, far beyond the elementary and isolated concepts of modern day science.

Beyond the level of control over matter, we find another area of achievement which we will describe as "Control over Spirit in Matter". This is the second of the three levels of development which were specifically explained and repeatedly demonstrated by Jesus of Nazareth during his earthly ministry. Here the advancing soul is approaching the threshold of spirit, energy, godhood, and now can begin to deal with spirit as well as matter - to heal the sick, the lame, the blind, or any infliction. When Jesus performed his acts of healing, he made it plain that the power or ability to do such works came from a much higher level than that of the physical body which he occupied. "Of myself I can do nothing, but of the power which cometh down from my Father (the level of spirit) in heaven, do I do these things."

There is one final point in the curve of development, which we will call "control over Spirit". It is the highest of the various levels of attainment which were explained and demonstrated by Jesus. It represents the final mastery of the individual over his environment, and the ultimate manifestation of the creative spirit whose presence in the original body-soul combination impelled the individual upward, where the human ego must and does begin to blend with universal consciousness - "I go unto my Father", "I and the Father are one".

Here we will point out that when a weakness or partial separation develops in the physical body and the spirit, an illness or disability is created. If the separation should become complete, the bond sometimes referred to as the silver cord will break and death of the physical body will take place.

Yet after Lazarus of Bethany had been dead for a period of four days, and after his body had reached a state of advanced decomposition, Jesus demonstrated that from the level of control over matter it was possible to restore the body of Lazarus to a condition suitable for occupation by spirit, and from the level of control over spirit he restored the spirit to the body and re-established the bond between them.

As the final lesson of his earthly ministry Jesus repeated the demonstration this time using his own life and his own body. "I lay down my life that I may take it again. No Man taketh it from me but I lay it down of myself. I have the power to lay it down and I have the power to take it again. This commandment (control) I have received from my Father (the level of spirit) in heaven".

From this fantasy, we could surmise that the life and ministry of Jesus of Nazareth were designed to serve two tremendous purposes:

first to point out and to light the path which leads to spiritual fulfillment "I am the Way";

second, to relieve humanity of the tremendous burden of guilt which had accumulated as a result of the doctrine of retribution "an eye for an eye" and a tooth for a tooth", which had been followed for generations. This was accomplished through the principle of vicarious atonement, "I am the lamb that taketh away the sin of the world", "Jesus died for our sins".

Note that the effectiveness of the sacrifice is dependent upon the belief of the individual. If any person will accept completely in his own mind and heart that the sacrifice was made voluntarily, that it was made for him and that it will remove his sin, then that person's conscience is immediately freed of its burden of guilt and he can proceed without hindrance, on the path to spiritual development.

Thus we see that, not only was Jesus of Nazareth the greatest master and leader who has ever come down the curve from the level of pure spirit to the consciousness of the undeveloped human; not only did he demonstrate the way, the truth, and the life, but he was also the greatest psychiatrist that ever lived, and the only one who, instead of charging a fee, offered his own life to assure the success of the treatment.

We have followed the path of the developing individual, from its point of beginning, when the body-soul combination first becomes aware of its own existence, and where the requirements of the body must be met before any other progress can be made. We have implicated the challenges to be met and understood as the individual moves up the curve of constantly increasing ability and manifestation until at last he reaches the level energy or light, (heaven), where the spirit becomes independent of matter, and the body has little or no significance.

In conclusion it may be desirable to restate, in the simplest possible manner, a few of the principle points which we have considered. First - the Path is one which every human being must, and will, follow, from one end to the other regardless of the length of time required, the number of approaches attempted, or the number of stopovers, detours, or obstacles which may delay the arrival of the traveler at his ultimate destination. When Jesus said, "whither I go thou canst not follow me now but thou shalt follow me afterward, "he was not speaking only to Simon Peter, nor only to his disciples. He was speaking to and of all humanity, wherever it might be. "And other sheep I have, which are not of this fold; them also I must bring, and they shall hear my voice; and there shall be one fold, and one shepherd."

"All of the things which I do shall ye do also, and greater things than these shall ye do". The implication is that there are still greater abilities to be achieved than the raising of the dead

Second - everyone must, and will, achieve all of the powers and abilities inherent in the various levels of development, as these levels are reached. When Jesus illustrated, by the performance of "miracles", the abilities which are achieved at each level, he repeatedly pointed out to his disciples and to humanity at large that "All of the things which I do shall ye do also, and greater things than these shall ye do. Is it not written in your law, I said, ye are Gods?" The implication is that there are still greater abilities to be achieved than the raising of the dead, which was the highest level Jesus specifically demonstrated.

The level of absolute creation, where new life and new universes are created may be one such level. Jesus appeared to be somewhat discouraged by the inability of even the more learned of the time to grasp the simple principles which he outlined and then demonstrated before their eyes.

Third - the abilities which are achieved at each level of development are not discarded when a new level is reached, but are carried forward as in any course of study or training; at least as long as the abilities are required by the advancing individual. For example - the ability to obtain the necessities of the body, which ability is achieved at the gold level, must continue to be used at least until the level of control over matter is reached, whereupon gold becomes of little or no significance. So, also, knowledge and wisdom must be sought and pursued diligently until the advancing soul begins to blend with Universal spirit when all knowledge, wisdom and understanding become readily available to the individual from the Universal source. Then the individual will no longer see "as through a glass darkly, but will see face to face." "And the light shall come forth as a crown of Glory, and all knowledge and the wisdom of the Universe shall be his; and the Understanding thereof."

The exact nature of the area or the environment in which the traveler continues his spiritual growth beyond the level of control over matter has long been a subject of speculation and some controversy. There are some who describe the change in environment by saying that the developing individual moves to a "higher plane", others say that the move is to a "higher frequency" or "rate of vibration". Still others feel that the change is best described as a move to a "higher dimension". There are also many persons who feel that because there are undoubtedly many other planets upon which life, intelligence and spiritual development has progressed considerably beyond the average level which has been achieved on earth; that perhaps the earth human may at some stage of his development take up his residence upon a more advanced planet where the environment may be more conducive of rapid progress. All of these speculations and partial definitions are the result of humanity's attempt to rationalize or to understand an area which is still somewhat beyond our understanding. Whatever the truth may be it is probably too complex to be explained in any words which are now in our vocabulary.

We can, however, press onward with the complete assurance that the "Path, the Way and the Light" do exist; that we are all upon the path; that we will all find the way; and that the light and love that are beyond understanding will continue to grow in brilliance and in warmth with every step of our approach
